I have translated legal documents for over 30 years.
The reasons for needing an official document translated are wide and varied - it can be a happy occasion of recent nuptials and the resulting need for your marriage certificate to be translated, or, if we skip ahead a few years, you might already need to present your divorce decree.
If you are looking for a new job, you might need to show your prospective employer some proof of your academic records and certificates.
I remember an occasion when a family consisting of a Latvian mother and English father asked me to translate their son’ s documents. It turned out there was an issue with the little one’s name which was spelled differently in the Latvian and English documents, all because of the Latvian grammar rules. I contacted the relevant language board and acquired additional paperwork, so the problem was averted.
You might have an inheritance issue or are dealing with cross-border real estate cases for yourself or on behalf of your clients. Some people have family members in the prison system who need help.

Certified Latvian translations / official translations in the UK
Every country has a different way of legalising documents. The same goes for translated documents. In order to submit them, they have to meet certain requirements.
In the UK, where the system is less bureaucratic than some other countries, we have less stringent certification rules, however, it also means that there is no single method for all document certifications.
First, why is certification even needed?
Faking documents is not a novel concept. Some enterprising souls did it as far back as in the times of Ancient Egypt, when they tried to alter wills or contracts or acquire a choice parcel of land that was not legally theirs.
As a result, when a document is presented for perusal at any authority, somebody must confirm that the document that was submitted is the same as the document that the authority holds.
When you submit a document in the UK, the authority or sometimes even a business can certify that they have seen the original of the document, and thus admit the document for internal use. This applies to all domestic documents in the UK.
However, when you bring a document into the UK from another country, usually somebody has to translate it, but, on top of that, somebody has to confirm the translation says the same as your original document. This is where the certification comes in.
The UK does not have a certification system for translators
The UK does not employ the sworn translator system, which is when only a pool of translators, having passed a specific set of exams and meeting certain requirements, is allowed to translate official documents.
In the UK, it is not the translator who is certified and thus produces translations that consequently are certified, but rather the translation is certified with the help of a public notary or solicitor.
Depending on the requesting authority and if the case involves an international element, it might or might not require an (and do not worry, I know what it is, even if you do not, and whether or not you need it).
If you still are not sure what to do, you might just bite the bullet and get in touch with me. I know exactly how to help you and make sure your documents are accepted - I have done it for over 30 years.

About me:
I have translated Latvian documents since the dawn of time, or at least before the start of the Internet. Yes, I am that ancient. But that means I actually know what I am doing and have known it for quite a long time.
- 30+ years of experience working as a Latvian/English translator in Latvia, Portugal, and the UK
- Qualified Member of ITI and Proz.com certified
- Worked with government authorities, police, courts, prison service, big brands, little brands, individuals, companies, law offices.
- All of the work I have done is subject to non-disclosure agreements, which means I cannot say with whom I have worked. However, that also means that your information (or even your existence) is safe in my hands. Nobody will know what I translated for you or why.
How it works:
- Get in touch - email or submit the form below. Or maybe just call, it is probably easier.
- Tell me what you have and what you need.
- I will tell you if I need any additional information and what that information is (or where to get it).
- You pay.
- I deliver.
- You submit your documents to the requesting authority.
It is really that simple!

My promise:
I know exactly what I am doing, so you will not have to worry that your documents might not be accepted. Do not forget - you are not paying for the words I translate, you are paying for 30+ years of experience I have.
- Do not look for certified translators in the UK - they do not exist. They live in other countries, not the UK. If you need documents for the UK, the documents have to be translated here.
- Do ask questions. The more, the better. Having to deal with paperwork is enough of a hassle already, and you do not want to do it twice (or three or four times).
- Ask and you shall receive. Well, at least when it comes to certified Latvian translations, I can help you.
YOU DO NOT PAY FOR THE WORDS, YOU PAY FOR THE EXPERIENCE
